Resenting being a "token," he quit at the first opportunity. Later, as one of the few black superheroes active, he was drafted to join the Avengers by Henry Peter Gyrich to fill a quota. The Falcon ultimately left as Cap's partner when he was named the leader of the S.H.I.E.L.D.

Red Skull attempted to use the Cosmic Cube to make the Falcon kill Captain America. In actuality, the 'Snap' persona had entirely been a construction of the Red Skull to discredit Wilson via racism, and in fact he had never been a criminal at all. Soon afterward, the Red Skull tricked Sam into believing he had a secret past as mobster "Snap Wilson" born from Sam's grief and anger, and that this was wiped from his memories using the Cosmic Cube so that Sam could be a mole for Red Skull. When the Red Skull eventually killed Roscoe, Rogers again became Captain America. When Rogers briefly abandoned his Captain America identity, others attempted to take up the mantle, including a young man named Roscoe whom the Falcon mentored. Wilson received help from the Black Panther, who created a harness for Wilson, allowing him to fly. Allegedly, Red Skull used the Cosmic Cube to give Sam the ability to telepathically communicate with birds, especially a falcon that Wilson had bought named Redwing. After their initial skirmish, Captain America and Sam defeated the Skull, and the Falcon became Cap's partner for a long time. Sam was lured to a Caribbean island named Exile where the Red Skull and his henchmen were hiding out. Sam did his best to try and do the right thing, volunteering and becoming a social worker. Some years later, his mother Darlene was murdered by a mugger while she tried to protect her children. His father Paul was a minister who had been killed while trying to stop a fight between two rival gangs when Sam was nine years old. Sam Wilson grew up in a tough Harlem neighborhood.

  • As with every other episode of this regrettably short-lived series, one taste and the viewer is hooked. While Simon Brimmer makes good use of himself for a change, Ellery is directed to the solution of the murder by the wine steward, Alexander the Sommelier (a solid performance by prolific character actor William Schallert). Suspects, apart from Nick's partner Eddie (with whom the deceased was known to argue), include piano player John Randall (Tab Hunter), his chanteuse sweetheart (Rosanna Huffman), mind reader The Amazing Armitage (Roddy McDowall), and cleaning woman Flora Schumann (Signe Hasso), who claims to be Dutch, not German. Just as the broadcast begins, the dead body of Nick Kingston is discovered locked in the wine cellar, clutching a broken bottle of wine originating from Germany, 'The Black Falcon.' Into a glass of wine someone had slipped poison, both colorless and odorless, otherwise Nick would never had swallowed it, then removed all traces of the wine and the glass, never noticing the dying man reaching for The Black Falcon, which features the same insignia that can be found on the victim's ring. Present are Inspector Richard Queen and son Ellery, prepared for an arrest if Brimmer comes forth with new information on an old case (this gives the Inspector a reason to explain why his department resents Brimmer's interference). Episode 12, "The Adventure of the Black Falcon," features the return of radio sleuth Simon Brimmer (John Hillerman), broadcasting live from an exclusive night club run by Nick Kingston (Lewis Charles) and Eddie Morgan (Howard Duff).
